Description

Abstract

Patents are legal instruments that give owners of inventions with exclusive
rights for exploiting their inventions. For practical purpose, only
technological inventions are eligible for receiving patent grants, which
typically has a limited period of 20 years’ protection. In today's fast-advancing
society, patents are increasingly being used as commercial tools for
monopolizing certain market sector and for extending patent owner's
presence to overseas markets. Public records of the patents, known as patent
databases, provide innovators around the world to share the knowledge
warehouse and compete with each other with further innovations. For
engineers and researchers/scientists, patenting technological advancement
can enable their organisations to stay ahead of the competition, and reap
financial benefit after investing in the technological research.
