Technical lecture

This event has finished
Description

The British Rail Class 323 electric multiple units were built by Hunslet Transportation Projects Ltd in Leeds between 1992 and 1995 and were equipped with 25 kV AC fed Holec traction equipment.  Owing to obsolescence of the GTOs (Gate Turn-Off Thyristor), which are at the heart of the traction inverters, the decision was taken to replace them with IGBTs (Integrated Gate Bi-polar Transistors). Jonathan Greening will describe the technical challenges behind this project and how they were overcome.

There is a tour of the equipment repair facilities at 16:45 followed by refreshments at 18:00.  Please report to the gatehouse for directions.

Directions to the site can be found from this site:

(Please note: attendees wishing to go on the tour of the factory must bring their own safety footwear and a hi-visibility vest, as there is only a very limited supply on site.)
