Delivering highly specialist engineering capabilities in an expeditionary Air Force

Sqn Ldr Adam Troughton, the Officer Commanding 71 (Inspection and Repair) Squadron, will be give a talk entitled, “Delivering highly specialist engineering capabilities in an expeditionary Air Force” , which will look at the current Service and engineering challenges and opportunities that the RAF faces.

71 (Inspection and Repair) Squadron is part of 42 (Expeditionary Support) Wing. It is located with its HQ at RAF Wittering and supplemented with several regional Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and aircraft repair teams in the UK. 71(IR) Sqn provides four technical engineering capabilities: the assessment and categorisation of structural damage to all fixed wing aircraft; conduct bespoke deployed aircraft repair tasks (survey, design and application) under the banner of Expedient Repair with assistance from the Sqn Defence Approved Organisation Scheme (DAOS) approved Repair Design Authority (RDA); conduct NDT in all areas of operation; and provide an aircraft ‘weight and balance’ capability. The Sqn is also responsible for all MOD NDT training and examination, responsible for the delivery of training on the Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) course and the co-ordination and testing of non-type specific and Out-Of-Area Test and Measurement Equipment Cells.
