Description

34081 “92 Squadron” Battle-of-Britain class loco saw service until 1964, but then ended up in Barry scrapyard. It was rescued by the Battle-of-Britain Society and went through a long restoration. It was brought back into steam in 1997 and went into service at Nene Valley Railway (NVR), Peterborough. It was re-dedicated in Sept 97 at a service attended by ex- Battle-of-Britain Spitfire pilots and retired jet pilots from 92 Squadron. After 10 years running, it is now undergoing its next overhaul. This requires a complete strip back to the chassis and a full rebuild to bring the locomotive back to the standard for Heritage Trains.

Speaker(s)

Alan Whenman trained as a motor engineer, and worked on high-performance and complex vehicle developments. He joined NVR in 1987. He was on the team that rescued the loco from the breakers, and has worked on 34081 since it's arrival in Peterborough.
