Chairman’s Letter

Automobile Division, Essex Centre, September 2014

Dear Fellow Engineers,

I am pleased to welcome you to the 2014-15 programme of events and activities of the AD, Essex Centre. The local centres exist and operate to help fulfil the Institution’s “Knowledge Transfer” remit, helping keep members and other interested professionals up to date with products and technologies relevant to their careers and individual pursuits, as well as a local networking opportunity.

We hope that you will find this year’s events continue to meet that objective, bringing a mix of new road vehicle developments together with innovative thinking in powertrains, and an insight into the more exotic world of Formula One hybrid drive development, courtesy of Mercedes Benz high performance engines.

As in past years we also aim to include one or more lectures on engineering projects with local impact, and this year our joint event with the South Essex Area is an update on some of the technologies being employed in the Crossrail project, currently one of Europe’s largest engineering projects, taking place just a few miles away.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Secretary, Sarah Haslam, on her recent election to the Trustee Board of the Institution, following the elections in May. Together with providing informative events, your local committee members also act as links back to the various boards and committees of the Institution, helping to ensure that the views of local members are refelected and communicated. This year we have also had the opportunity to host both the President of the Institution, Patrick Kniveton, and the CEO, Stephen Tetlow, to display to them some of the excellent engineering being undertaken in the local area, as well as to discuss items of current relevance to the Institution, and the profession as a whole. If you do have any comments or items you would like raised, please do make these known to either myself, or Sarah, or other committee members, and we will do our best to ensure they are fed back to HQ.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and I look forward to meeting you at our upcoming events.
