Welcome to the North Herts Area from Your New Chairman

As the incoming Chairman of the North Herts Area Committee, I look back at the events organised in our area in the 2014-2015 season with a strong sense of the hard work and effort on the part of our committee that makes these events a success.  The range of engineering topics has been diverse; we have hosted talks on recycling, thorium reactors and sliding bearings – each delivered by experts in their field.  At our annual dinner we enjoyed a talk on weather forecasting from a Met Office physicist.  As ever, we are extremely grateful to the speakers at all of our events, fully acknowledging the commitments they make.

We were very pleased to support the Royal Aeronautical Society’s talk held at Airbus on hybrid air vehicles, and were also pleased to be associated with the EEESTA event on engineering for the disabled.

Our programme of talks for the 2015-2016 season is nearly finalised with subjects including spacecraft composite materials, sustainability, Formula 1, and carbon capture, all of which I hope will be of interest to the engineers in our area.  I am always impressed with how our events provide an opportunity for our local members to gain knowledge and insight from other engineering professionals and the chance to question and challenge them on their subjects.

More widely, a new government is being formed as I write and it will be very interesting to see the effects of a new administration on the engineering profession.  For the North Hertfordshire area we should look for indications of how confidence in industry, manufacturing and infrastructure development might produce exciting opportunities for individual engineers and those commercial and academic engineering organisations within our area.  The North Herts Area is ready to respond and looks forward to hearing from engineers new to our area who are interested in supporting our efforts.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me or any other members of the North Herts Area Committee.

Yours ever

Keith Lucas
