Welcome to the Cambridge Centre of the Biomedical Engineering Division (BmED)

The Cambridge Centre was created in September 2015 to establish the first regional presence of the Biomedical Engineering Division (BmED). This is following the same model as the Centres for the Automobile or Railway divisions.

The aim of the Centre is to provide relevant events to the biomedical engineering community in the greater Cambridge area.

This web site is gradually populated with up to date information. Please visit it again soon and tell your friends and colleagues about it.

Our 2016 events can still be found using the past events link on the left of this text.

Our first event in 2017 took place on 21 March looking at the work of the Engineering Design Centre at the University of Cambridge in the medical field culminating into their Healthcare Design Toolkit.

We regret that we had to cancel our June event. Cambridge Medical Robotics are keen to talk to our local members and we are hoping to have them on our 2018 programme..

Our September event was  on Dry Powder Inhalers, form David Harris, Specialist in Respiratory Drug Delivery at PA Consultants.

Our final event for 2017 has now been scheduled for Wednesday 20 December. It will be on the miniaturisation of surgical robotics by Chris Wagner, Head of Advanced Surgical Systems at Cambridge Consultants. Please book your place.

For 2018, we are aiming at 4 events. We are pleased to be collaborating with the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge for the first one which will be a one day Bioengineering conference to be help in Cambridge on 15 March 2018. Further details will be added soon.

For any enquiries or if you would like to be become active in the centre or if you would like to propose a talk or visit for the 2018 event programme, please write to BmED_Cambridge@imechenearyou.org.

IMechE members who have selected Biomedical Engineering on their profile and live within our "catchment" (roughly East Anglia) will be notified of our events by email. Please take a moment to make sure your profile is up to date. Others are invited to follow us on social media (links on the right) where we also post our events and news.

Best regards,

Current surgical robots give surgeons the ability to precisely and delicately manipulate tissue without requiring large incisions into the body. The robots themselves are large and costly, however, which limit their use. We discuss some of the engineering underpinnings that cause these robotic systems to be large, and talk through strategies for overcoming these limitations.
