Description

East West Rail is one of the country’s most strategically important rail projects, with its direct link through the corridor dubbed the UK’s own ‘Silicon Valley’.

The railway will create a direct link between Oxford and Cambridge, delivering benefits for passengers and businesses, regional and nationally, by unlocking additional housing and economic growth.  The route incorporates sections of existing railway as well as an entirely new alignment for the route east of Bedford.

Stephen Barker will describe the background to the East West Rail scheme and the role of the newly-formed East West Railway Company in developing a different business model for building and operating a UK railway that will also integrate with established parts of the industry.

Stephen will also talk about the current progress with the scheme and share EWRCo’s thoughts on the types of technology they will be using to establish a safe, reliable and customer focused railway.

Stephen was appointed as Engineering Director for the East West Railway Company in early 2017.

He is a Chartered Civil Engineer and his railway career stretches back for over a quarter of a century.  He started out at British Rail Research in the early 1990s where he gained experience in a broad range of railway topics.  He spent four years at Railtrack (Southern) in the late 90s before joining Chiltern Railways in 2001.  Stephen took a leading role in the development and delivery of Chiltern’s “Evergreen” infrastructure upgrade schemes, culminating with the delivery of the new Marylebone – Oxford route in 2016.  Immediately prior to joining EWRCo, Stephen was Chiltern’s Business Development Director.
