The cross-sectional profiles of the rail wheel and the rail itself play an essential role in steering a railway carriage with minimum energy expenditure. Poorly designed and maintained profiles result in misalignment with the track with consequential wear, fatigue, frequent maintenance and increased fuel consumption. Professor Iwnicki will summarise with case studies the wheel-rail forces which support and guide a railway vehicle and the analytical simulation tools that have been developed.
