Professor Richard Folkson, President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a former Chief Engineer from Ford Motor Company will present a lecture entitled The Car of the Future. This will cover developments in vehicle design including the increasing use of electronics as we head towards autonomous self-driving cars. It will also major on future propulsion trends as engineers strive to reduce the usage of fossil fuels and move towards more sustainable transport solutions including hybrids, electrification, alternative fuels, hydrogen, fuel cells and other measures to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Richard was the Project Manager of the original Ford Focus and the previous two Ford Transit programs before the current model and spent 3 years working in Detroit, USA in the mid 1990's. Most recently Richard ran all Product Verification and Testing activities in Europe with a staff of 1,500 engineers, before moving to a cross-brand role as Chief Engineer responsible for Engineering Standards and Technical Alignment across Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Aston Martin and Mazda.

Richard was Chairman of the SMMT Engineering Committee representing the motor industry on technical matters at meetings with UK Government departments and is a past-Chairman of the Automobile Division and President-elect of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, of which he is a Fellow. He was Chief Judge for the IMechE Formula Student competition until 2014. He is the 130th President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers since May 2015.

He lectures regularly at Universities on a broad range of Engineering subjects and was appointed visiting Professor to the University of Hertfordshire, Department of Automotive and Aeronautical Design Engineering in 2004. He is also a Royal academy of Engineering Visiting Professor for Innovation and Design.

In January 2006, Richard elected to take early retirement from Ford to allow him concentrate on consultancy relating to Low Carbon Vehicles and Climate Change. He has been working with several large manufacturers on Low Carbon Research Projects and is an Assessor for the Technology Strategy Board Low Carbon Innovation Programme. He recently edited a best selling text book entitled Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicle Technologies for Improved Environmental Performance which was published by Woodhead in April 2014.



Prof. Richard Folkson read Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College, London and following graduation worked in almost all areas of Ford Product Development including Body design, Engines, Electrical, Product Planning and Project Management.
