The role of the professional institutions has evolved over many years serving both its members and the wider community in general. They have in their time influenced Governments with policy and serving Industry alike to embrace technology and solving design problems often at a national level.

How does the community now view these Institutions and to what extent is their pivotal role defined by our society and should professional people be encouraged to join?

Our speaker John upon leaving school was told by one of his teachers that he was a ‘no hoper’ and with a limited educational background his future could have been bleak. As a young boy he started an Engineering Apprenticeship and through the day–release facility available at the local technical college attending one day a week and two evenings was able to gain both academic and technical qualifications. On enrolment day you made sure that you were there at least an hour before the college opened to make sure you obtained a place. He completed his education at Brunel University as a postgraduate studying for two master degrees, being one of its first students when the university moved to the Uxbridge campus.

Looking back his career path has been interesting and he was able through his own determination studied to become a Chartered Engineer. He is Chartered as a Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer and Chartered Metallurgist with three of our major Institutions. He gained a patent for his company at the age of twenty-two and held many senior positions in industry as well as in the Further and Higher Academic fields. His research work was in the blading stability of Rolls Royce RB211 gas turbine blading. More recently with the late Prof Heinz Wolff was reviewing dexterity and practical skills of young children who are were born and live in flatted accommodation.
