Speak Out for Engineering

Speak Out for Engineering West Midlands is a competition organised by the IMechE Birmingham Young Members panel. The competition provides young engineers with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate and develop their presentation skills and competence in public speaking. Presentations are judged by a panel of professionals from industry and each entry will receive feedback on their presentation.

Competitors are asked to give an oral presentation on a mechanical engineering subject. Presentations must be a maximum of 10 minutes in length, followed by up to 10 minutes of questions from the judges. 90% of the total marks are given for delivery and 10% for technical content. This ensures that, while all presentations must have mechanical engineering content in its broadest sense (e.g. purpose, research, design, feasibility, and practicality), all presentations have the same chance of success despite varying degrees of technical content.

All entrants are required to submit a presentation summary (maximum 200 words) which will be judged by the IMechE panel based on engineering content. Those shortlisted will be selected to present at the regional competition. The West Midlands 2019/20 competition will be held at The University of Birmingham on Thursday 17th October 2019. The winner will receive a £300 cash prize and be entered into the UK final. The runner up will receive a £200 cash prize.

The winner will also be entered into the UK 2019/2020 final on Friday 29th November 2019.
