This event has finished
Description

The presentation will cover the history of the cruise industry, how it started, it’s growth and volume today, before going on to discuss the cruise ships themselves. The relative size of the ships will be compared with shipping as a whole and the main systems, power and propulsion, air conditioning, waste disposal, etc. will be described. Also covered will be the regulatory framework, codes and standards used in the industry, what happens when these are not sufficient and how, as in any complex project, a good systems engineering approach would mitigate some of these risks.

Richard Vie recently retired as Vice President Technical Development & Quality Assurance at Carnival Corporate Shipping based in Southampton. He has played a major role in the development of the cruise industry over a period of 30 years. Richard is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Marine Engineer, Fellow and Past President of the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology. He is a Visiting Professor at Southampton University
