Description

In the times before instant news, the speed at which news could travel was dictated by a swift horse or a sailing ship. Now just imagine the way in which the electric telegraph changed the world in the nineteenth century - news could be received within minutes of the event, The biggest challenge was to link Britain to the United States with a cable under the ocean and that is the subject of this talk. There were colossal engineering challenges and huge amounts of money at stake. The talk is supported with some samples of submarine cables and is most definitely not technical.

Lecture organised by the Stoke-on-Trent Association of Engineers.
