Energy for Life

More than 80% of the world’s current energy demand is provided by burning carbon based fossil fuels at a rate which is likely to exhaust them before the end of this century. Well before then, if alternative energy sources are not urgently exploited, the carbon dioxide emissions from burning these fuels are likely to cause catastrophic damage to the world’s environment due to global warming.

The practical potential of renewable energy falls far short of meeting the forecast growth in the world’s energy demand into the future. Only nuclear power can meet the bulk of this demand. Nuclear fission is already a mature technology and nuclear fusion, if pro-actively developed, could be producing commercial power within 40 years.

The logic appears inescapable. But is our Species capable of responding in time?
