This event has finished

Caroline Griffiths, the current President of the IMechE, will visit the North East Region on October 10th and 11th 2017.  Members are invited to meet Caroline at a reception in the Bar Lounge, Durham University Business School at 18:30 on October 10th. Drinks and canapes will be served.

This is an excellent opportunity not only to meet our President but to air your views on the future of the Institution and the engineering profession, a subject much under discussion at this time.

The following day Caroline will visit the South Durham University Technology College at Newton Aycliffe, the new Hitachi rail vehicle manufacturing facility and Cummins engines in Darlington. At Hitachi and Cummins she will meet IMechE members working in these companies.

Places at the reception are limited so please book your place as soon as possible. This reception is open to members only.

Further Information about the speaker:

Carolyn Griffiths was educated at the University of Birmingham.

Finishing her role in 2015, she was the UK’s Chief Inspector for the Rail Accident Investigation. She established and was in charge of this organisation, which is functionally independent. She reported to the Secretary of State for Transport. The organisation investigates accidents on UK’s mainline, the Channel Tunnel, metros including London Underground, metros and trams to prevent re-occurrences. During her tenure with the organisation she investigated wide ranging engineering issues, operations, organisations, human behaviour and national and international standards and policies.

Prior to this, Carolyn's career spanned from working shifts on the shop floor in maintenance depots to being a Senior Vice President in an international organisation. She has worked in manufacturing, maintenance, operations and consultancy, in the UK and overseas. She was recently a Governor at Imperial College London and has been awarded an honorary doctorate from Cranfield University for her professional work and achievements.

Since joining the Institution, she has always supported its work, looking for practical ways of furthering its effectiveness in supporting the engineers and the broader engineering community that it serves. She has been a member of Council, the chairman of the Railway Division and a member of three recent Institution task forces. A member of the Railway Division Board, Carolyn is also deputy chairman of the Technical Strategy Board.

Carolyn is currently leading the Institution’s initiative of providing railway engineering training to members. While this training is delivered by a selected third party it is defined and continuously reviewed by senior engineers from the industry. This is providing a pilot framework for the Institution to offer other engineering training, the technical quality of which is managed by members who are senior specialists and experienced engineers from the relevant industry sector.

Finishing her role in 2015, she was the UK’s Chief Inspector for the Rail Accident Investigation. She reported to the Secretary of State for Transport.
