Welcome to the Greater Manchester Area

The Greater Manchester Area is at the heart of the North West Region which can claim both historically and today to be the engineering centre of the nation.  Its products, far too numerous to list in full, have included cars and commercial vehicles, ships, submarines, railway locomotives and aircraft.  Other major industries are glass making, chemicals and petroleum refining.  It is the birthplace of the UK nuclear power and computer industries.  Eight universities in the Region have strong engineering departments.

For all this, the North West is no land of smoking chimneys.  with Lakeland in the North, the Forest of Bowland in the centre, the Pennines to the East and a long and varied coastline to the West, it boasts some of the finest scenery and recreational countryside in England.  Meanwhile, in the South, Manchester is a centre of vibrant city life (and - dare we say it - the home of two well know football clubs!), while North Cheshire is a land of green pastures and ancient country houses.

The Greater Manchester Area of the IMechE offers a wide range of lectures etc covering the appropriate industry subjects in the area, together with educational events to increase the awareness of young people to the exciting world of Engineering.

The IMechE is represented by Area committees in South Lancashire, Greater Manchester, South Cumbria (based in Barrow-in-Furness), North Lancashire and West Cumbria (centred around Whitehaven).  The Automotive, Manufacturing, Power, Process and Railway Divisions have active centres in the Region.  The activities of all these groups are co-ordinated by the Regional Committee.
