Welcome to the North Western Region

Programmes of events and activities for the academic year ending May 2013 have now been published by our Area Committees and Young Member Panels in Greater Manchester, Lancashire, South Cumbria and West Cumbria Areas together with those for our Technical Divisions (Aerospace, Automotive, Power, Process and Rail). Details of these extensive activities are shown below and on the web page for each Division, Area and Young member Panel listed on the left.

Our Regional Business Plan, modeled around the Institution’s five themes of Education, Energy, Manufacturing, Transport, and Environment, is focused on three main strategic objectives:

  1. To hold a balanced number of events - primarily by ensuring that the events are commensurate with the activities our members are engaged in, so that we will encourage more members to attend events, and by communication.
  2. To encourage more young members to attend events - by arranging lectures that are complimentary to the work they are doing at college or university and by organising events that are appealing to young members.
  3. To persuade more members to become more involved with the Institution.

Our excellent programme of events, visits and volunteer activities will, we hope, assist your professional development, add to your learned knowledge and, importantly, provide inspiration for a new generation of younger people to become engineers.

Please don’t miss the opportunity of attending our prestigious Regional Annual Dinner on the 19th April 2013 (for details see ‘Future Events’ below) when you can help us celebrate the success of our Region’s outstanding companies and young engineers. Awards will include the Manufacturing Excellence, Engineering Design Challenge, Speak out for Engineering and, not least, the Young Mechanical Engineer of the Year.

Why not volunteer to help drive one of our many projects and help get across the importance of engineering to the future of the economy. Our STEM Ambassadors work in schools and academic establishments, supporting events in conjunction with Primary Engineer, Greenpower, Smallpeice Trust and several other organisations.

David Barrett, our Regional Business Development Manager, welcomes enquires about Company-Based Registration schemes that make transition to full membership of the Institution as straightforward as possible. Individuals and Companies can contact him at:
