Region Chairman

At the Scottish Region Annual Meeting in Perth on 29th April, David Irving of Doosan Babcock was elected Chairman of the Region.  He replaces Dr Alex Galloway, who had served his two years in office with great distinction, and who has agreed to becoming the Deputy Chair.

After graduating from Strathclyde University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, David Irving joined the Babcock Power Limited graduate training programme, following which he worked in the company’s research and technology group, specialising in the mechanical integrity of plants in the power and energy industries. He moved on into roles associated with commissioning, project operations, sales and business development for both the new build and aftermarket sectors. Following several changes in ownership, the company is owned by Doosan Group, where David is now a customer manager with responsibility for several key accounts in the thermal power, hydrocarbon and process sectors. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE), and a member of the Scottish Energy Association board.

His involvement in IMechE activities started during his undergraduate studies, which soon afterwards resulted in him taking on the roles of Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Scottish Region Graduates and Students Section (now Young Members).  He later became a member of the Scottish Region committee, and was the Region’s Dinner Secretary for eight years.  He takes on the position of Chairman of the Scottish Region with a desire to support members’ interests throughout the profession, including the regional panels in their excellent work engaging with the membership, and to contribute towards the many initiatives aimed at encouraging young people into engineering.
