Welcome to the Wessex Region

This site will provide information on events and activities being organised by the IMechE Wessex Region.  I hope you find something of interest in your area and if you need any further information please contact us

Welcome to the Events and Contacts pages on Near You for the Wessex Region.  Our region covers activities organised by volunteer members in the Bournemouth, Dorchester & Weymouth, Portsmouth & Isle of Wight, Salisbury and Southampton Areas where approximately 3860 members reside and/or work. If you have time to devote to volunteering please contact your local Area committee and get involved.  Even if you are too busy to volunteer, we would always be grateful for ideas for lectures and visits in your area.

There are a host of interesting events being arranged for you in the next few months, and so I urge you to scan the Near You events pages and book or register online.  Guests and members of other professional engineering institutions are most welcome at all events unless restrictions apply, and guests may register with the booking system in their own right.  Online registration makes it easier for us to administer events and to inform you if there is a last minute change in arrangements, so please use this process if you can.  The IMechE will be investing in a major IT upgrade in 2015 which will hopefully improve this service and tailor the website to individual member’s preferences.

The first half of the year has already been packed full of successful events across the Region.  The Portsmouth & IOW Area hosted the Regional Strategy Board (RSB) Meeting at HMS Nelson on 16th September, which was followed by a behind the scenes visit to the Mary Rose Museum.  We were able to welcome local member Geoff Baker as Vice-President of the IMechE and as the newly appointed Chair of the RSB, which is the forum where the 16 Regional Chairs in UK and Ireland meet quarterly.  The Area followed this on the 24th October with a ground-breaking political Engineering Debate at the University of Portsmouth which had local MP and former Minister of State for Universities and Science, the Rt Hon David Willetts MP, and Dr Rhys Morgan from the Royal Academy of Engineering answering questions posed by an audience of 120, with additional feeds from e-mail, Facebook and Twitter.  The Dorchester & Weymouth Area committee also presented Budmouth College with an IMechE-sponsored 3-D printer this autumn, which was covered by an excellent article in the Dorset Echo.  The Bournemouth Area’s Spitfire Lecture attracted 130 attendees on 25th November, and the Annual Arnold Barks Memorial Christmas Lecture was held in Salisbury on 3rd December; Dame Professor Wendy Hall presented a thought-provoking lecture marking the 25th Anniversary of the World Wide Web.

Next year we will be welcoming the President of the IMechE, Group Captain Mark Hunt, to the Portsmouth & IOW Area on 30th April and 1st May; there will be a dinner held on the 30th April at which he will present new Members and Fellows with their certificates.  Dr Alex Dickinson, the new Chair of the Southampton Area, will be leading the Region’s 1st year university undergraduates in a bid for a Wessex team to win the IMechE’s 2015 Design Challenge.  Finally, with our sponsor, Trant Engineering, we will be launching the Wessex Region Engineering Excellence Awards.  We are looking for companies to participate and/or to act as sponsors.  Prizes will be awarded under a specified number of categories and awards will also be given to top performing volunteers and young members in the Region.  An Awards Dinner is planned for October 2015.  Young members should make contact with their local Area committees and our Region YM Rep, Gavin Kerby (see Contacts).

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the workings of the IMechE’s Support Network.  This is a separate charity which seeks to support members and their dependants in times of need.  More details may be found by following the link:
