Welcome to the Wessex Region

This site will provide information on events and activities being organised by the IMechE Wessex Region.  I hope you find something of interest in your area and if you need any further information please contact us

Welcome to the Events and Contacts pages on Near You for the Wessex Region.  Our Region covers activities organised by volunteer members in the Bournemouth, Dorchester & Weymouth, Portsmouth & Isle of Wight, Salisbury and Southampton Areas where <4000 members reside and/or work. If you have time to devote to volunteering please contact your local Area committee and get involved.  Even if you are too busy to volunteer, we would always be grateful for ideas for lectures and visits in your area.

There are a host of interesting events being arranged for you in the next few months, and so I urge you to scan the Near You events pages and book or register online.  The IMechE has just launched its improved website and the functionality of the Near You Bookings System has greatly improved.  Over coming months there will also be further upgrades and improvements in the mail and file management systems for the volunteer network.

Last year the Region hosted a visit by (the now) past President, Group Captain Mark Hunt OBE, to the Portsmouth & Isle of Wight Area and he presented membership certificates to new Fellows, Members, Incorporated Engineers and Engineering Technicians at HMS NELSON.  This year, IMechE President, Professor Richard Folkson will be visiting the Salisbury Area on 7th April 2016 and will be presenting certificates that evening.  If you are invited to receive your certificate from the President we encourage you and your partner to attend one of these events where you can meet fellow professional engineers in congenial surroundings.

The new Wessex Region Engineering Excellence Awards (WREEA) and Annual Dinner 2015, held at the Guildhall, Winchester, were a great success and we will be expanding this event outside the boundaries of the Region in 2016 to include businesses in some areas of the Western, Thamesway and South East Regions under new commercial arrangement with a marketing company, React Comms. The event will be called the Wessex Engineering Excellence Awards (WEEA) 2016.  There will also be prizes for members as in 2015, so we need you to nominate your candidates for Engineer of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Young Member of the Year.

Once again the Arnold Barks Memorial Christmas Lecture(s) for schools and members was a sell-out with F1 Engineer and member, Jock Clear, as our speaker.  The Region’s first entry in the University Design Challenge was a success with Dominic Clements from Southampton University winning one category in the competition.  This year the Region will have its heats at the University of Bournemouth on 11th March 2016 and we look forward to sending a winning team to the finals in October.  We encourage you to get involved with our events across the Region, whether it be a lecture, visit, luncheon club, young member or schools activity.

I will be standing down as Region Chair in March and I look forward to welcoming back Bob Walsh as Region Chair at the AGM to be held in Romsey on Saturday 19th March 2016.  I would like to thank all the volunteers in the Region and Areas for their hard work over the past three years.

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the workings of the IMechE’s Support Network.  This is a separate charity which seeks to support members and their dependants in times of need.  More details may be found by following the link:
