Welcome to the Wessex Region

This site will provide information on events and activities being organised by the IMechE Wessex Region.  I hope you find something of interest in your area and if you need any further information please contact us

Welcome to the Events and Contacts pages on Near You for the Wessex Region.  Our Region covers activities organised by volunteer members in the Bournemouth, Dorchester & Weymouth, Portsmouth & Isle of Wight, Salisbury and Southampton Areas where approximately 3900 members reside and/or work. If you have time to devote to volunteering please contact your local Area committee and get involved.  Even if you are too busy to volunteer, we would always be grateful for ideas for lectures and visits in your area.

There are a host of interesting events being arranged for you in the next few months, and so I urge you to scan the Near You events pages and book or register online.  Guests and members of other professional engineering institutions are most welcome at all events unless restrictions apply, and guests may register with the booking system in their own right.  Online registration makes it easier for us to administer events and to inform you if there is a last minute change in arrangements, so please use this process if you can.  The IMechE will be investing in a major IT upgrade in 2015 which will hopefully improve this service and tailor the website to individual member’s preferences.

The first half of the year has already been packed full of successful events across the Region.  The Portsmouth & IOW Area hosted a very successful President’s Visit to the Region on the 30th April and 1st May.  Group Captain Mark Hunt spoke at the Portsmouth Luncheon Club and then enjoyed a captivating visit to Jim Stokes Workshop in Waterlooville where he saw some priceless classic cars being restored and pre-War reproduction engines being manufactured.  He then presented 28 new members and fellows with their certificates at an awards ceremony hosted by the Portsmouth & IOW Committee at The Wardroom, HMS Nelson.  The following day he visited the Network Rail Apprentice Scheme at HMS Sultan where he was hosted by Network Rail and Babcock staff.  The President thanked the “talented team of volunteers” in the Wessex Region for their efforts in supporting the members here.  The first half of the year has also seen both the Universities of Bournemouth and Southampton commit to participating the IMechE’s 1st Year undergraduate Design Challenge, and we hope to obtain similar commitments from Portsmouth and Solent before the next academic year.

Coming up we have interesting lectures and visits programmed in all areas, including the 10th Arnold Barks Memorial Christmas Lecture in Salisbury on Weds 2nd December. However, with our sponsor, Trant Engineering, our main focus in the Region will be on the inaugural 2015 Wessex Region Engineering Excellence Awards and Annual Dinner to be held in Winchester Guildhall on Friday 9th October.  Members are encouraged to get their companies to participate in the business awards and to nominate individuals for Engineer of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Young Member of the Year awards.

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the workings of the IMechE’s Support Network.  This is a separate charity which seeks to support members and their dependants in times of need.  More details may be found by following the link:
