Welcome to the Western Region

The Region covers the five Areas listed below:

  1. Bath & Bristol
  2. Devon and Cornwall
  3. Gloucester
  4. Somerset
  5. Swindon

In addition there is a Young Member Panel centred around Bristol. There are also three Divisional Centres for those with specialist interests in the Aerospace, Automobile and Railway industries.

Information about events and contacts for each Area or Panel is provided in their respective pages.

The overall programme for the Region aims to provide a mixture of learned society activities including prestige lectures, talks on popular subjects, visits to industrial organisations, aspects of Continuing Professional Development, student prizes and social functions.

Details of the programme, typically comprising around 90 events organised by the Region, Areas, Young Member Panel and Divisional Centres, are printed on a single card, which is sent to all our members during September each year via an insert in Professional Engineering.

    A visit to Castrol’s UK headquarters and Global Technology Centre in Pangbourne, Reading, for a tour around their world-leading technical facilities and hear a selection of examples of how Castrol is pushing the boundaries in liquid engineering.

    Somerset College - Taunton
    Alex Henshaw’s story started with his adventures in the Golden Age of Flying. As the youngest amateur he won the King’s Cup Air Race and then achieved the record solo flight from London to Cape Town and back in four and a half days with just a compass, a chronometer and a set of maps from the AA.

    Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts - St Peter Port, Guernsey
    The presentation will discuss the status and engineering challenges associated with the Royal Navy's new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth which is due to enter service shortly along with the Fleet Air Arm's F-35B jet fighters. The F-35B is the Short Take Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) version of this fifth generation jet fighter which is going to provide a quantum leap in capability over previous fighters operated by the Royal Navy.

Brian Stratton of UK Power Networks will explain how this prestige project, which required much innovative thought and involved thousands of contractors was undertaken successfully in the required timescale. This achievement was recognised by the awards the team received from within the industry.

Schemes range from the Hull Tidal Surge Barrier refurbishment, large rising sector gates and floating sector gates in South Korea through to the Xayaburi dam across the Mekong River in Laos.
