Cardboard Boat Race 2020

Cardboard Boat Race 2020 - Race Day Cancelled

Due to ongoing restrictions on organised gatherings, we feel it would be irresponsible to go ahead with the event as we have a duty of care to you, our volunteers, participants and the local community. It would also be unfair to ask volunteers to spend the day either in PPE or potentially at risk without it. We simply can’t run the event safely without the fantastic volunteers who help with event management, run the STEM activity stands and, most importantly, run the safety boat.

Pre-build teams

We want to recognise the achievements of teams who have prebuilt their boats and all the hard work put into them. There will be a virtual boat parade where we will be able to showcase the boats already built and we will have prizes based on design and fancy dress, full details of this will be sent soon. As a committee, we are also investigating the possibility of exhibiting the boats. If we do succeed with this, we will be in touch to arrange.

A new engineering challenge

For those who hoped to join us for the Build on the Day category, we are working on a week-long engineering challenge. This would mean a number of design and build projects would be announced on Saturday 5th September, giving you and your team a week to design and build an entry for the competition. We will encourage the use of household and recycled/found items and ask you to submit images or video of your builds to us. Exact timings and deadlines TBC. This challenge will take a fair amount of work to develop so please let us know if you would be interested so we can gauge participation numbers.

Please register your interest in the engineering challenge and/or join the mailing list for next by completing this survey (https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/LLYK7BD) Your contact details will only be used as selected by you

We are sorry to have had to cancel the racing event and we know you were looking forward to it as much as us. We hope that next year’s event will be bigger and better than before with plenty of time to plan for a special second day of racing.
