Cardboard Boat Race 2020

Plans for Cardboard Boat Race 2020 regarding Covid-19

Plans and preparations are ongoing for the Cardboard Boat Race 2020 which we hope will take place this 12th and 13th September. We are monitoring all government guidelines, and will follow any and all direction and advice given to us regarding this event.

We very much hope to make this a special event to tie in with Mayflower 400 celebrations and so we are trying to make this work as best we can in accordance with social distancing guidelines. Please read the information below about plans for the race and register your teams now.

As we do not need to make any major financial outlay until closer to the event, we will be taking sign up now by survey form and invite you to pay when we know for certain that the event will be going ahead.

Build on the Day - Saturday 12th September

We intend for this portion of racing to be exactly as we normally run it (only on Saturday 12th September). This will feature 3 groups of participants arriving to start building at 0930, 1030 and 1130 with racing at 1300, 1400 and 1500 respectively.

Prebuilds - both days

If we have sufficient numbers, we may run the pre-build races on both Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September. We will fill spots on Saturday first and email you if there is a decision to use both days.

Prebuilds - schools

At the moment, we are not planning to run any workshops in schools. However, for schools with Key Worker children still attending we can offer you the following:
Webinar based workshops - Bruce (our STEM coordinator) is generating materials to provide schools with all the information they need to build a boat. We hope to be able to drop off some materials if required (following social distancing protocols). You are welcome to build with or without our support, just let us know if you do need anything

Prebuild - family groups/other groups

If you would like to build your own boat (perhaps you are looking for something to do at home) please let us know and we will provide online resources to you as well as materials (if we can safely do this).

Race entry fee £20 + £20 refundable deposit for tool hire (Build on the Day only)

Design Competition

As usual we will be running the design competition ahead of the event to design the committee boat.

Competitors of all ages and experience are invited to submit their designs to Helen.timpson@member.imeche.org by the 24th July for shortlisting before being put to public vote.
Please note, registering your interest on the link will not guarantee a place at the event but you will be notified when the eventbrite page is made live if the race is going ahead. You will receive a monthly update email and reminders to sign up.
