Cardboard + Water  -  might sound like a recipe for disaster BUT last year’s contestants will soon tell you that not only can it be done, but that it makes for a huge amount of fun and a great day out!

This year’s challenge begins at 10 o’clock on Saturday 16th September at Commercial Wharf (next to The Boathouse Café).  As the opening event of this year’s Waterfront Festival it’s sure to kick off with a splash and bring in the crowds.

You have two categories to choose from:

This year we are expanding the event to include a 'pre-build' category. This means you have two options to choose from when registering:

Build on the day- Feel like you can build your vessel in 3 hours? This is the one for you!

Pre-Build - If you feel you need more than 3 hours to perfect your design, register for pre-build and lift the pressure off your build. Just turn up on the day with your vessel and your sea legs ready to race! We will provide workshops with all the materails required if you feel you need a bit of a steer for just £5.

Have you got what it takes to be crowned champion of the cardboard vessels?

Be BRAVE sign up NOW.

It costs £20 to enter a team of up to 6 people and you MUST register in advance.   For teams with under 18 members there must be at least one responsible adult and those who wish to get in the water must be able to swim!

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers will provide you with all of the equipment and materials you need to build your boat and the

Plymouth and Devon Schools Sailing Association

will provide you with everything you need to sail it.  This includes buoyancy aids, and a safety boat crewed by RYA qualified instructors.

If you would rather just watch then there will be plenty of other activities going on including;

  • A STEM stand by The City College who are this year's Ocean City Festival headline sponsor.
  • A range of additional engaging STEM workshops aimed at all ages.

Challenge your mates, bring your family or rouse your work mates. But be quick as spaces are limited and they are disappearing fast!
