Peter Thorpe (top) holding the now very fragile book containing highly detailed notes of Mr John Rastrick, one of the three judges at the Rainhill trials in 1829. These notes contain highly detailed information on the construction and operation of each of the five locomotives in the trial which was won by Stephenson’s Rocket.

Items that we could handle and read were displayed in one of the conference rooms (lower picture). Of particular note is the Photograph Album nearest the camera on the left and this contains very clear black and white photographs taken during the construction of St Pancras station. Also on the table are a detailed drawing of a Railway Directors coach, a collection of tickets from different era’s and the letter written by a teenager to his sister in London describing the first train run on the Stockton to Darlington Line and including a detailed drawing of the whole train.
In summary, this was a highly interesting and informative visit.

Another excellent visit to Search Engine. Our members were very enthusiastic and amazed by the wealth of information that has survived for well over 150 years. As you can see from the photo below, there was a display of items that our party could handle and read.
