Message from the Chairman

Dear Members,

As the new Chairman of the Yorkshire Region, I am very privileged to be introducing our programme of events for 2017/2018. The relatively small number of volunteers who make up our four Area Committees, our Young Members’ Panels and our Regional Divisions, have all worked hard to broker and organise this forthcoming season of diverse events, which should be both enlightening and interesting.

Last season’s excellent range of events were generally well attended and well received for which we are very grateful, and I urge you to continue to support us by attending these future events if you can. It makes all our efforts worthwhile. I see these events as offering a local window to appreciate a spectrum of engineering, mainly relating to the Yorkshire Region.

I would like to thank my predecessor, Dr Peter Ingham, for the excellent work that he has done on the Regional Committee over the past 2 years. During this time, the committee has continued to increase its STEM outreach to schools and colleges, and its interactions with undergraduates at local universities, in addition to the full programme of events. We have a similar number of school and university events planned for this next season, which reflects a key IMechE objective to help increase the number of students entering engineering careers across the UK, which is clearly now a national imperative. We welcome any engineers who are interested in getting involved in this rewarding voluntary activity.

We are looking forward to welcoming Carolyn Griffiths, the Institution’s 132nd President, to the Region next February, when we will show her some selected engineering highlights from the Yorkshire Northern Area. Carolyn has spent her career in railway engineering both in the UK and overseas and has latterly been the Chief Inspector of Rail Accidents for the UK government. Carolyn will also join us at our Annual Dinner next April, which once again will be held at the historic Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield, details of which can be found in our Programme Card.

Finally, I would like to thank our sponsors - AESSEAL, Elevation Recruitment Group, OSL Consulting and Withers & Rogers LLP. Their help and support enable us to continue to be one of the few IMechE Regions in the UK to produce a Programme Card showing the full range of events in this format, which I believe is still very much appreciated by members.

Yours sincerely,
Alan Brattan CEng FIMechE , Yorkshire Region Chairman
