High speed rail technologies have been in service for nearly half a century and continue to evolve. Andrew McNaughton will describe the development of a high speed rail operational concept for particular UK requirements and its engineering principles for technology selection and route design building on worldwide proven systems. This includes interworking with the current UK rail network given the staged approach to creating a wider high speed network that has implications for Scotland
