Description

Presentation by Ian Child, Chief Engineer Rolls Royce Trent 800 and RB211 Modern gas turbine engines, such as those used on today’s civil aircraft are designed for continued, reliable and safe operation. Nevertheless these machines will encounter some tough flight conditions challenging their operation and reliability. A recent example that caused widespread publicity and a fair amount of disruption, both to airlines and to the public, was the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud. During his presentation Ian will look at the effects of volcanic ash on the operation of the jet engine, ways in which this can be measured and quantified and the on-going work to minimise future disruption to the airlines and the flying public.
