This lecture will address the challenges that were encountered when designing the third generation Airbus A380 leading to its maiden flight in 2005. The Rolls-Royce powered version received its type certificate of airworthiness in 2006 clearing the way for service entry in 2007. Technologies which enabled designers to achieve marked improvements in safety and performance will be discussed along with the uncontained engine failure event on 4th Nov 2010.
