On Thursday 26th March 2009 the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Wolverhampton Young Members panel received a presentation from Rupert Paul and Ian Calvert. Rupert is a free-lance motorcycle journalist writing for the motorcycle magazine “Superbike” at the time of the lecture. Nuclear Fusion offers the possibility of almost limitless power that is safe, economic, reliable and virtually emission-free. While research into magnetic confinement has been well publicised, the alternative of laser-induced fusion is little known, but is on-going in Britain and elsewhere. The British-led HiPER Project is in the forefront of this research and will be described by the Project Engineer, Mike Tyldesley.
