Hong Kong - Technical Talk on In Search of HK’s Optimum Fuel Mix for Electricity Generation in 2020
Event Date/Time: 30 August 2012 18:15 to 20:30
Event Type: Talk
Industry Sector: Energy Environment & Sustainability
Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Room ST 111
Ir Dr CW Tso is currently as Adjunct Professor in the City University of Hong Kong. He is the former Chairman of IMechE Hong Kong Branch, and the former General Manager (Projects) of HK Electric.
Greenhouses gases (GHG) emitted by mankind are one of the major causes leading to climate change. Electricity generation is the largest source of global CO2 emissions by sector, and accounted for over 67% of Hong Kong’s total GHG emissions in 2009.
In order to mitigate climate change and reduce GHG emissions, the HKSAR Government proposed to revamp the fuel-mix for electricity generation as one of the reduction of GHG emissions measures in 2010 and expected to achieve the target in 2020.
As stated in the 2010 consultation document, the Government proposed to increase the proportion of nuclear energy to 50% of Hong Kong’s overall fuel mix by 2020, natural gas to 40% and renewable energy (RE) to 3-4%, and reduce coal to less than 10%.
Ir Dr CW Tso will talk about Hong Kong’s current energy policy, electricity market structure and the use of fuel/energy for electricity generation. He will also present his views on the impact of changing fuel-mix for electricity generation on existing electricity supply infrastructures, emissions performance and tariff.
IMechE Hong Kong Branch is the lead organizer of the talk jointly with Hong Kong Institution of Engineers – Mechanical, Marine, Naval Architecture & Chemical Division, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers – Gas & Energy Division, Energy Institute (Hong Kong Branch), Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (Far East District Section), and American Society of Mechanical Engineers – Hong Kong Section.
