Description

To continue to thrive and to improve environmental performance, our city is exploring the initiative to a) utilise more natural gas for greener power generation through use of advanced combined cycle gas turbine units and b) develop an offshore liquified natural gas (LNG) terminal using LNG carrier equipped with regasification unit (FSRU) to support the increased natural gas consumption. In parallel, as Hong Kong is strengthening its logistics role, application of latest technologies in the areas of container terminal and aviation industry are also essential in coping with future needs.

To get an exposure to and to gain an insight into the technologies, a technical visit has been organised to Shanghai for our HK professional engineers. Shanghai has the reputation of being the leading modern industrial centre in PRC, and is in possession of manufacturing plants which are capable of demonstrating these technologies. Included in the visit are tours to the following leading companies in the PRC:

1) 3rd June - Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) for apprehending the construction of large LNG carrier with GTT Mark III membrane containments. The Mark III membrane system is marketed by GTT, France and is a cryogenic liner directly supported by the ship’s inner hull. It is composed of a primary metallic membrane positioned on top of a prefabricated insulation panel including a complete secondary membrane.

2) 4th June - Shanghai Electric Group for gaining knowledge on gas turbines design and manufacturing and the technology development. It has a 40% stake in the Italian based Ansaldo Energia. The latter, after having acquired former Alstom heavy duty gas turbine assets from GE, has set to introduce the new generation of advance H-Class turbine into the rapidly growing Asian Power Market in partnership with Shanghai Electric.

3) 5th June - Zhenhua Heavy Industries for understanding the innovative design of the fully automatic world’s largest container terminal.  This was developed for Yang Shan 4th Phase and the associated management system to ensure safety and efficiency. Included will be a site visit for an appreciation of the automatic/ semi-automatic operations of bridge cranes, gantry cranes and automatic guided vehicle.

4) 6th June morning - Wärtsilä Corporation China for an introductory session on various types of LNG regasification units operating under cryogenic conditions and the design for most efficient regasification operations. A visit to the factory for producing the latest propulsion system will also be made.

5) 6th June afternoon - Commercial Aircraft Corporation (COMAC) for gaining an understanding on the current capability of aviation industry in the PRC, its future development and perhaps possible areas of cooperation with HK counterparts. At present, COMAC is developing a complete range of aircraft, including widebodies, turboprops, business jets, helicopters, seaplanes, and even zeppelins.

The visit will also include other attractions for participants to experience the rapid development of Shanghai and nearby areas.
