Ian D. Mash - IMechE Australia Branch Chairman & Superkart competitor

Description

The Victorian panel is hosting Ian Mash, IMechE Australia Branch chairman, as part of his chairman's tour.

Ian will be presenting upon: MOTOR SPORT, THE MOUNTAIN & RISK ASSESSMENT

5.30pm for 6pm.

SUMMARY

Motorsport and risk management might be viewed as odd bed-fellows. In Ian’s case, he regularly drives his racing kart at speeds approaching 200km/h. When at the racing track he receives two comments pretty routinely. Firstly, ‘you guys are nuts!’, but secondly he is often asked if what he is doing safe?

This presentation explores issues of risk assessment, risk tolerability and acceptability; something all engineers should be familiar with. It uses an exciting case study: is it safe (enough) to race 235 km/h karts around Mount Panorama? Issues of energy transfer, crashworthiness and race engineering will be discussed. The presentation includes on-board footage of a trial in which 6 drivers participated.

This work was undertaken to influence the national Motor Sport authorities to make a change. Given recent tragic events in Indy Car Racing, this presentation is both current and topical.
