Motorsport and risk management might be viewed as odd bed fellow. In my case, I routinely and voluntarily lap my little race machine at speeds approaching 200km/h. At the race track – we get 2 comments pretty routinely. Firstly - ‘you guys are nuts’. But secondly – we get asked a lot – is it safe? I understand what the person means. But in safety risk terms – nothing is absolutely safe. Rather, the question I would expect from an engineer’s is, ‘is it safe enough?’ This paper explores the issues of risk assessment, risk tolerability and acceptability: something all engineers should be familiar with.
The Paper use an exciting case study: the consideration of whether it is safe enough to race 235km/h Karts around Mount Panorama. The paper discusses issues of energy transfer, crashworthiness, race engineering, and includes some on board footage of a trial in which 6 drivers (including myself) participated. This work was undertaken to influence the national Motor sport authorities to make a change – so is current and topical.
