Welcome to the Southern Asia Region

The Southern Asia Region provides support to around 2400 members residing in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. Region is supported by one branch, two groups and country representatives. Student Chapters are functioning in India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. More information will be found in the respective web pages.

Members and prospective members are assisted with their needs and interaction among members is at a high level through AGMs, Annual Dinners and Newsletters.

We work with local branches of UK based engineering institutions and the local institutions. This has raised awareness and the profile of the IMechE. Various events are organized by the Branches and the Groups with details mentioned on their respective pages.

India and Sri Lanka are now members of the Washington Accord and Pakistan is a provisional member.

Southern Asia Regional Election - Announcement

The nomination period for the Southern Asia regional elections officially closed on the 28 February 2014.  All the nominations received have been reviewed in terms of eligibility and I can confirm that both nominations for the positions of Southern Asia  Regional Chair and Young Member representative will be elected unopposed.

Sam Perera

Education Brighton College of Technology, now University of Brighton. Commenced my engineering career in 1966 with Crane Ltd, Burgess Hill, in the Research & Development department.  In, 1968 joined the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and held a number of positions including Operations Manager and Engineering Manager.  In 1980 joined Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines and held a number of senior staff positions.  From 1989 to 1994 held positions as Director of several Statutory Boards and as Chairman of a State Construction Organisation for 4 years in Sri Lanka.  Practised as management and engineering consultants for 13 years.  Held the position of engineering consultant to Ministry of Health & Nutrition and Secretary to Provincial Minister of Health. 

Past Council Member & Chairman of Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee and a Member of several committees including Membership at the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka for over 20 years. 

Forum Member since 2002 and Vice President for 4 years at the Organization of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka.

Policy Statement

I will continue the programme for Membership development and bring together further the younger and senior members of branch and groups which will strengthen the improved image and standing in the region.

It will be my pride to continue to lead the regional young & senior membership to further recognition.

Promote the value of IMechE and mechanical engineering to wider areas of society from schools to universities.  Encourage the professional development of engineers.

Candidate for  Regional Young Member Representative:

Anshul Singla (Elected unopposed)



Anshul Singla is a mechanical engineering graduate from Delhi College of Engineering, University of Delhi. Right from his college days, he is proactive in taking initiatives and implementing new ideas. As a student leader of college bio diesel research group, he published two research papers in International Journals and also presented his research at International conferences at Barcelona and new Delhi.

After graduating, he joined L&T and worked as a Piping Engineer for 3 years. Presently he is working as a Piping material engineer with Fluor.

While he was in college, he became an Affiliate member of IMechE and later he converted his membership to Associate. He is a core member of the IMechE India Branch committee and participates in taking important decisions of the Branch.

Policy Statement

  • Channel the power of the youth towards mechanical engineering.
  • To develop new young members panels for effective utilisation of young engineers in professional development.
  • To revitalise existing student chapters and provide support in student chapter activities as well as set up new student chapters and motivate student members towards professional development.
  • To motivate and develop new young volunteers within the region and branches.
  • To channel new ideas and support young members for implementation.

To initiate new young member events within the region and to participate in international young member activities and replicate the activities at regional level.

Both Sam Perera and Anshul Singla will take up post on the date of the Institution’s Annual General meeting on 28 May 2014.

    IMechE Southern Asia Region to host an Asia-Oceania event for the young members of the constituting regions. The event will be held alongside the Asia Pacific SOFE finals. The event is scheduled to be held in Colombo on 6th – 8th November. The primary focus of this event is to inspire the attendees to address the issues surrounding Affiliate to Associate conversion in the Asia Oceania Region.
