DESCRIPTION:Near You Event - Robotic Cars A talk jointly organise
d by IMechE and RAEs Yeovil\n\nEvent Type: Talk or debate\n\nIndustry Sect
or: Automobile\n\nSpeak Details: Tony Pipe is Deputy Director of Bristol R
obotics Laboratory (BRL) and Professor of Robotics and Autonomous Systems\
, with over 180 publications and over £2.5M in grants since 2005. His expe
rtise is in safe close-proximity physical Human-Robot Interaction.\n\nDesc
ription : 'Driverless cars' seem set to be in the vanguard of those signif
icantly&nbsp\;\nsafety critical and physically instantiated 'Robotics and
Autonomous&nbsp\;\nSystems" (RAS) that will be "let out in public"\, i.e.\
, generally&nbsp\;\navailable for purchase as affordable commercial items.
Some say that&nbsp\;\novercoming the many technical\, legal and societal
issues associated with&nbsp\;\nwide acceptance of this technological advan
ce will open the RAS&nbsp\;\n'floodgates'\, by setting the mechanisms in p
lace for many other RAS&nbsp\;\ndevices to reach the marketplace. There ar
e a number of reasons for this&nbsp\;\nview\, covering the complete range
from technology 'push'\, through&nbsp\;\nsocietal 'pull' and encompassing
many commercial motivations. However\,&nbsp\;\nthere are significant chall
enges\, opportunities and risks involved from&nbsp\;\nboth technical and s
ocietal directions. In this presentation\, Prof. Pipe&nbsp\;\nwill use a f
ocus on a description of some of the most significant&nbsp\;\ntechnology c
hallenges to also discuss the societal issues with the&nbsp\;\naudience\,
in the context of the work he has been undertaking in two&nbsp\;\nInnovate
UK funded projects in the area\, VENTURER&nbsp\;\n(https://www.venturer-c
 ars.com/) and FLOURISH\n\nContact Details:
