 peaker Philippa Oldham was the lead author of the IMechE Report "Autonomou
 s and Driverless Cars"\,&nbsp\;you can read the&nbsp\;news story&nbsp\;her
 e. \n\nAutonomy in the context of a car or vehicle implies that decisions 
 taken by the embedded software in the vehicles control system will be suff
 iciently intelligent to recognise events on the road which\, we as drivers
  may deal with out of experience\, intuition or anticipation. The sensors 
 on board the vehicle will have to sense pedestrians\, bends\, other vehicl
 es\, cyclists\, horses\, road blocks and deviation signs and&nbsp\;adverse
  weather conditions. The designers of autonomous vehicles still have a lot
  of work to do. \n\nIn her lecture\, Philippa will discuss many of these c
 hallenges and touch upon the legislative\, societal and insurance issues w
 hich need to be resolved before autonomous vehicles can be integrated onto
  our road network.\n\nIs the debate around Autonomous and Driverless Cars
