 reliability\n\nSpeak Details: \n\nDescription : Seminar on Managing Risk i
n Complex Engineering Systems - An application in nuclear weapon system sa
 fety assessment\n\nCo-organizer: IMechE HKB &amp\; HKARMS&nbsp\; &amp\; HK
 IE-NE\nSupporting Organizer: HKIE - MMNC\, HKIE-SSC\, HKNS &amp\; UCLA Alu
mni Hong Kong Network\n&nbsp\;\nWhile safety cannot be directly measured\,
the risks associated with a complex engineering system can be assessed in
stead to register the safety performance of the system.&nbsp\; Risk has be
en defined in various ways in different industries\, and is often misunder
stood.&nbsp\; For a complex engineering system analysis\, probabilistic ri
sk analysis is used to answer the following questions:\n\n&bull\;&nbsp\; &
 nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; What can go
  wrong?\n&bull\;&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &n
bsp\; &nbsp\; How likely is it that this will happen?\n&bull\;&nbsp\; &nbs
 p\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; If it happens\
 , what are the consequences?\n&bull\;&nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp
 \; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; &nbsp\; What are the uncertainties?\n\nThe Spea
ker will discuss the application of risk analysis in system safety assessm
ents using an application in nuclear weapon system safety assessment (WSSA
) as an example. Instead of focusing on a fixed location-based engineering
system such as a power plant\, a risk model can be developed to address t
he stockpile-to-target sequence (life cycle) of the weapons.&nbsp\; The ba
sic physics and types of nuclear weapons will be addressed for an understa
nding of the weapon life cycle.&nbsp\; All materials are taken from the pu
blic domain.\n&nbsp\;\nSpeaker's Bio\nDr. Vincent Ho is a career risk mana
gement and safety professional with over 35 years of experience in transpo
rtation\, nuclear\, and Defense industries specializing in quantitative ri
sk assessment\, fire risk analysis\, system safety and assurance\, risk-ba
sed decision analysis\, as well as security analysis.&nbsp\; Dr. Ho active
ly promotes the applications of risk management in enhancing safety\; he i
s the Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Risk Management an
 d Safety\, and a former Chair of HKIE-SSC\, HKIE-MMNC\, and Special Projec
ts Subcommittee of IMechE.&nbsp\; &nbsp\;Dr. Ho received his BS\, MS\, PhD
\, and MBA from the University of California\, Los Angeles. He is an Adjun
ct Professor at the City University of Hong Kong\, and also teaches at the
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on risk management related
  subjects.\n\nFee: free\n\nContact Details:
