DESCRIPTION:Near You Event - Establishing a surgical planning service based
on 3D printing technologies\n\nEvent Type: Talk or debate\n\nIndustry Sec
tor: Biomedical engineering\n\nSpeak Details: Paolo Gargiulo is Associated
Professor at the center of Medical Technology\, Reykjavik University/Univ
ersity Hospital Landspitali. His research lies in the field of clinical an
d tissue engineering\, medical image processing and 3-D modelling with ove
r 60 papers in peer reviewed international journals.\n\nDescription : The
use of 3D printing technologies in healthcare applications is a well-known
and consolidated process. This process is based on the acquisition of vol
umetric images from computerized tomography and / or magnetic resonance an
d on their elaboration through specific software applications (eg. MIMICS\
, Materialize) allow isolating / segmenting the anatomical regions of inte
rest and producing files of compatible format with 3d dimensional printers
.\nThe real challenge today is to create specific patient anatomical model
s to support surgical planning as integrated services in a Hospital system
. Dr. Paolo Gargiulo is a pioneer of these technologies\, he has establish
ed\, more than 10 years ago\, the first integrated surgical planning servi
ce in Europe based on 3D printing technologies at Landspitali National Hos
pital of Iceland. During these years more than 200 operations have been as
sisted using these techniques in various clinical specialties such us: max
illofacial\, orthopedic\, plastic surgery\, cardiac surgery and neurosurge
ry. In all cases there was a substantial reduction in the time in the oper
ating room and greater safety in implementing the surgical procedure. In s
ome cases this process helped save patient's lives having provided additio
nal information on the disease and giving the surgeon the opportunity to t
ry the surgical procedure directly on the 3D model [1].\n\n\nContact Detai
