DESCRIPTION:Near You Event - Engineering the future of Offshore Wind in the
Energy Crisis - Opportunities and Challenges\n\nEvent Type: Technical lec
 ture\n\nIndustry Sector: Energy transfer & thermofluid mechanics\n\nSpeak
Details: Dr Alexander Quayle led the ground-breaking\, 400MW Green Volt fl
oating wind project from concept to £3bn major project. Former bp economis
t Victoria Barthelmess has completed extensive modelling of the UK's energ
y system\, including as part of the annual bp Statistical Energy Review.\n
\nDescription : \n\nThe UK possesses\nsome of the best offshore wind resou
rces in the world and has established\nitself as a global leader in the in
dustry. The question is no longer whether\noffshore wind works\, but what
role it can realistically play in delivering a\nsecure\, affordable\, and
 low-carbon UK energy system.\n&nbsp\;\nThis lecture\nexamines the UK&rsquo
\;s renewable energy options through an engineering and systems\nperspecti
ve\, assessing the practical generation potential of offshore wind\,\nfloa
ting offshore wind\, and solar PV within the constraints of geography\,\ni
nfrastructure\, economics\, and system operability. It will explore the sc
ale of\nenergy that can credibly be delivered\, the opportunities for floa
ting wind in\ndeeper offshore regions\, and the complementary role of sola
r generation in a\nfuture highly electrified economy.\n&nbsp\;\nThe lectur
e will\nalso address one of the central technical challenges of a renewabl
e-dominated\npower system: the Dunkelflaute &mdash\;\nextended periods of
low wind and low solar output. The discussion will examine\nthe engineerin
g solutions available to manage it\, including long-duration\nenergy stora
 ge\, interconnection\, dispatchable low-carbon generation\, demand\nflexib
ility\, hydrogen\, and strategic system design.\n&nbsp\;\nFinally\, the le
cture\nwill consider the enabling infrastructure required to maximise the
value of\nrenewable energy and how this is already reshaping the UK and re
defining\nScotland's place in the Energy system. \n\nContact Details: Dr.
  Alex Quayle\nAddress: United Kingdom.
