 ersity of Bristol whose work has taken her around the world to study lava 
 flows in Hawaii and Italy.&nbsp\; Professor Cashman has also studied explo
 sive eruptions and was working in the USGS at the time of the Mt St Helens
  eruption.\n\n&nbsp\;Flood basalts present an untold threat to life as we 
 know it due to the gases erupted.&nbsp\; Historically there have been many
  flood basalt eruptions\, some have been linked to the Permian\, Triassic-
 Jurassic and Cretaceous-Tertiary&nbsp\; mass extinction events.\n\n\n&nbsp
