 e UK\n\nDescription : The Energy Harvesting Research Group at the Universi
 ty of Exeter is working on cutting edge academic research with a firm focu
 s on needs of industry. We use a fully integrated system approach to addre
 ss research challenges on the mismatch between energy harvested and energy
  demanded by wireless sensing systems in the areas of:&nbsp\;\n\n* Novel e
 nergy harvesting transducer designs &nbsp\;\n* Modelling and Simulation&nb
 sp\;\n&nbsp\;* Power management with energy-aware architecture&nbsp\;\n&nb
 sp\;* Low power consumption wireless sensing nodes&nbsp\;\n* Integration o
 f the above developed technologies for applications&nbsp\;\n\nProf. Zhu&rs
 quo\;s group harvests energy from the vibration of aircraft in an active s
 ervice and human walking movement energy and then convert the harvested en
 ergy into useable electrical energy to provide electrical power for low po
 wer consumption wireless communication sensor networks\, making them self-
 sufficient in energy supply.&nbsp\;\n\nThe developed system for aircraft p
 otentially enables aircraft structural health monitoring systems to be com
 pletely autonomous to run without constantly maintenance because this tech
 nology is &ldquo\;fit and forget&rdquo\;\, without the need for batteries 
 and therefore without need to replace batteries and so it greatly reduces 
 costs and time required for installation\, replacement and maintenance. Lo
 gistic\, military\, and civilian aircraft transports will benefit from thi
 s development\, for example\, structural health monitoring of airframe\, g
 earbox and micro and small UAV sensing.&nbsp\;\n\nThe developed knee-joint
  energy harvesting uses a novel &ldquo\;Pizzicato excitation&rdquo\; to en
 sure piezo-harvester to be capable of working at a wide range of vibration
  frequency and increase the efficiency of piezo-harvesters for low frequen
 cy. This proposed Pizzicato excitation has overcome most piezoelectric ene
 rgy harvester poor power harvested in real operational environment.&nbsp\;
 \n\nProf Zhu will present her group research methodology and their develop
 ed two high performance &ldquo\;proof-of-concept&rdquo\; energy harvesting
  powered wireless sensor node demonstrator to harvest aircraft wing strain
  energy for structural health monitoring application and harvest human wal
