A
ccounting for Uncertainty in Offshore Wind Economics:
The Case of Blade Leading Edge Erosion

The exploitation of offshore wind energy plays an increasingly crucial role in carbonising electricity generation in the UK and worldwide, and significant progress is being made towards further lowering its cost. However, offshore wind energy cost is more difficult to determine than that of electricity based on fossil or nuclear fuels, due to a variety of environmental and engineering factors. This presentation will review and discuss some of the main causes of offshore wind energy cost variability, and will present ongoing research work at Lancaster University on the impact of wind turbine blade leading edge erosion on offshore wind energy cost.

Dr. Campobasso is Associate Professor in Renewable Energy Systems and Computational Fluid Dynamics at Lancaster University, member of the ASME Wind Energy Division and Associate Editor of Sustainability. His research interests include fixed-bottom and floating offshore wind turbine aerodynamics, assessment of energy losses due to turbine blade leading edge erosion and wake/turbine interactions in tidal arrays and wind farms, and development of multi-fidelity simulation methods for the analysis of these problems for both research and industrial application.
