Description
This event is joint with IET - please book via one of their event webpages, depending on whether you wish to attend in person (Stafford) or online (MS Teams); thanks.

The 1960s saw the commencement of many rotary piston engine developments using the principles described by Felix Wankel and his colleagues at NSU. The majority of these used petrol as fuel but, uniquely, to meet the requirements of the Military Vehicles and Engineering Establishment (MVEE), in 1964 Rolls-Royce (Crewe) was awarded a contract to develop a diesel version as a high power-to weight ratio powerplant for use in fighting vehicles.
The presentation will cover the design concept and challenges, the extensive development activities, and the successes and failures of the programme which was terminated in 1974 despite engines having been run successfully on the testbeds and in a vehicle.
One of the surviving engines is being recommissioned, and the progress of this will be reviewed up to the date of the presentation.
