Drawing on examples from his extensive career, both as a professional & academic engineer, Prof. Schmid will introduce the concept of “Systems Engineering” and its application to railways, focusing on the need to manage the complicated and complex nature of the railway. His talk will also include a brief exploration of Ireland’s railway history.
Prof. Felix Schmid is the Chair of the Railway Division of the IMechE for 2020-2021; the theme of his year as chair is ‘System of Systems-Thinking for Railways’.
Prof. Schmid graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich with an MEng in electrical and electronic engineering. He spent 3.5 years with GEC Traction (later part of Alstom) in Manchester, designing control-systems for electric locomotives, before taking a lecturing role at Brunel University where he completed his doctoral degree. Following a sabbatical as a railway inspector with the Swiss Federal Office of Transport, he returned to Britain to a new position at The University of Sheffield, where he created the MSc in Railway Systems Engineering. In 2005, he transferred to the University of Birmingham, becoming director of education of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education. Prof. Schmid retired in 2020 and is now Professor emeritus of Railway Systems Engineering at the University of Birmingham.
There is no charge for this lecture, and it is open to the public, but booking is essential.
