Description
Ever wondered how you tunnel through 34.6 km of solid Alpine rock and keep trains running through it at 200 km/h? Join IMechE Switzerland for an exclusive private group tour of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel, the third-longest rail tunnel in Europe and one of the great feats of modern tunnelling and railway engineering.
Starting at the BLS Infocentre in Frutigen, we'll get an introduction to the tunnel's construction and operation before boarding a minibus to the North Portal to inspect the emergency intervention staircase. From there we head to Mitholz for the heart of the visit: the technical control centre, a full-scale 1:1 test section, and a rare vantage point inside the operational rail tunnel itself, close enough to feel high-speed trains thunder past.
This is a hands-on, behind-the-scenes look at the systems, safety infrastructure, and operational engineering that keep one of Switzerland's flagship transport assets running, a great opportunity to see world-class civil, mechanical, and systems engineering in action, and to network with fellow IMechE members over the visit.
