This is a CALL FOR CANDIDATES for a Germany round of “SPEAK OUT FOR ENGINEERING” (SOFE), hosted by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, which we are planning to hold in the evening of Thursday 19th October in Berlin.
Candidates must give an oral presentation on any mechanical engineering subject. The presentation must last no more than 20 minutes, with a further 10 minutes allowed for audience discussion and questions from the judges.
A first prize and a second prize will be awarded by the judges:

In addition, the winner of the round will be invited to participate in the European final, which will take place in Seville, Spain over the weekend of 17th-19th November, at which further prizes will be awarded and travel expenses refunded.
Purpose
The aim of SOFE is to promote the ability to communicate mechanical engineering subjects effectively. The competition is specifically concerned with verbal and visual communication in describing and explaining technical subjects. It is also designed to promote interest in the art of communication.
Eligibility and competition rules
Candidates MUST be either an Affiliate or Associate member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, or a member who has been professionally registered for 10 years or less.
Candidates are required to prepare a synopsis of the presentation of 200 words maximum, which should be included with the notice of registration. Failure to submit the synopsis may invalidate the entry. The presentation must be made by an individual, regardless of whether the subject is part of a group ‘technical’ project. Judges will expect more experienced candidates to have more polished skills and their marking assessment will reflect this. A winning entry in any year is not eligible for entry in subsequent years.
