Technical Visit
07 December 2012 11:00 - 15:00
This event has finished

Turbomolecular pumps are used to produce ultra-high vacuum, having an electric motor driven rotor that runs at high speed with various disc and blade stages for pumping.

It presents challenges to mechanical engineering design:  they run at very high rotational speeds (up to 80000 rpm), have very small gaps (0.3 – 0.5 mm ) and tight tolerances between moving elements that must never touch, and thus vibrations and whirl must be designed out of the product.  The high kinetic energy of the running rotor poses additional targets for reliability and safety.

The presentation will explain some of the current state of the art technologies and the research projects for next generation products.
