The presentation will illustrate how engineers can contribute to a successful railway industry of the future. This will include addressing challenges arising from:
• Continued passenger and freight growth
• Sustainability considerations including fuel choice and emissions
• Train control options to improve capacity
• Opportunities provided by enhanced communications
• Transport modal shift

The presentation will also provide examples of how the industry should become more system orientated and use experience gained in Europe and other parts of the world. The presentation will also review how the industry should take advantage of imminent changes resulting from Crossrail and High Speed Rail.

Richard East works at Atkins and has spent several years working in Denmark on ERTMS and new vehicle projects. He has been part of the successful Inter City Express Programme resulting in orders for over 1100 new Inter City vehicles including both bi-mode and electric vehicles.
