Rachel joined British Rail Engineering as an Undergraduate Engineering Management Trainee in 1990 and graduated from Sheffield University in 1994. On graduating, Rachel worked for BRML then Adtranz, moving from Doncaster to Derby and Crewe. She moved to Atkins Rail in 2000 as a Project Manager, before joining Porterbrook Leasing in 2007 where she fulfilled roles in logistics and new trains. Moving to East Midlands Trains as Head of Fleet – Regional in 2018, she took her current role of Head of New Trains in 2019 in the newly formed East Midlands Railway.

The Class 810 “Aurora” is the new Hitachi built Intercity train for the Midland Mainline, while building on the class 80x IEP trains platform it is a new design of train.  It has been designed in Pistoia Italy and built in Newton Aycliffe (including assembly of the aluminium bodyshell from parts delivered from Italy and Europe). It is the first Hybrid intercity train with the same performance in both electric and diesel modes.

Rachel has managed the procurement of the new class 810 “Aurora” trains and will describe the project and its many challenges from the start to the current position, the experience of introduction of the early  units into passenger service and what work is remaining to complete to get the whole fleet delivered and operational.
