Description

As part of the successful I-rail event our March meeting will be combined with their ‘Distinguished Lecture’ which this year will concern the future electrification of the railway network.
The fourth annual iRail Distinguished Lecture is presented by Peter Dearman, Head of Energy at Network Rail.
There is very clear recognition that as this century progresses, fossil fuels will not be freely available, and will become uneconomic. For the Railway a shift to electric traction will be crucial, with the ability to leverage many different energy sources. A major programme of main line electrification is already underway. The Midland main line electrification is already approved and plans are developing. Debates about how to link in the North to ECML and the Transpennine route are already high on the agenda.
The Lecture will examine these route electrification plans, the plans for rolling stock deployment and development, and the all important technological advances in electric traction which this will drive.

Speaker(s)

Peter Dearman has worked in railway infrastructure engineering for over 40 years and has been involved in the development of the UK electrified network.
